Detrol®
Detrol is used for the treatment of an oveactive bladder. DETROL
is available in a 4 mg or 2 mg dose. It should be taken as prescribed
by your doctor. For most people, this means taking it once a day
at about the same time every day. It may be easiest to remember
if you get into the habit of taking it either every morning or every
evening.
DETROL can be taken with or without food. Food does not impact
the overall absorption or effect of DETROL. DETROL should be taken
with liquids and swallowed whole.
Inform your healthcare professional if you are taking any other
medications before you take DETROL. Be sure to mention those you
can buy without a prescription, especially cough or cold medicines,
which may also affect urination.

Helping DETROL work:
DETROL has been proven effective in the treatment of overactive
bladder. But there are several other steps you can take to help
get the maximum benefit from your therapy.
Behavioral training. Bladder retraining is one type of behavioral
training used in overactive bladder. It involves learning to gradually
increase the time interval between bathroom visits and learning
ways to help resist the sudden urge to urinate.
Diet. Certain foods and drinks may irritate your bladder. These
may include coffee, tea, cola, chocolate, alcohol, citrus juices
and fruits, tomatoes and tomato-based products, and spicy foods.
It may be helpful to limit or eliminate these items from your diet.
Make sure that you always drink an adequate amount of liquid
about 6 to 8 glasses of liquid throughout the day, spread out as
evenly as possible. Limiting your fluid intake too much can have
an adverse effect on your overall health. You may want to plan your
daily intake so that you can start to taper off on drinking about
2 or 3 hours before going to bed.

Bowel regularity. It is important to maintain bowel regularity.
Constipation (infrequent or difficult passing of dry, hard stools)
may actually worsen bladder symptoms. By keeping healthy bowel habits,
you'll help to avoid constipation.
Exercise. Pelvic muscle exercises or "Kegel exercises"
can strengthen the muscles that help control the urethra, and thus
help increase urinary control. Kegel exercises involve tightening
and relaxing the pelvic muscle, with the goal of holding each contraction
for 10 seconds. You can practice these exercises anytime, anywhere,
while lying, standing, or sitting. Your doctor or another healthcare
professional such as a nurse can help you learn the technique and
plan a pelvic muscle strengthening program.
Weight control. Avoid gaining excessive weight. Too much weight
can increase pressure on the bladder, which may contribute to bladder
control problems.
Quit smoking. Cigarette smoking is irritating to the bladder muscle.
