K-Dur precautions: Potassium supplements should be used with great care in renal insufficiency and should never be given concurrently with potassium-sparing diuretics, eg spironolactone, triamterene or amiloride (also in combination with thiazides). Some patients may develop potassium depletion despite the use of potassium supplements. This is a particular danger to digitalized patients or those with hepatic ascites.
Nonspecific small bowel lesions characterized by stenosis and possibly ulcerations have been associated with the oral administration of tablets and capsules containing potassium salt.
Symptoms and signs which indicate ulceration or obstruction of the small bowel in patients taking tablets containing potassium salt are indications for stopping treatment with such preparations immediately.
